Developing your psychodynamic clinical approach
No previous experience necessary!
I specialize in supporting the ongoing professional development of clinicians who seek to develop a psychodynamic clinical approach. The supervision will be primarily psychodynamic (psychoanalytic) in approach but may draw from insights from other theoretical modalities, such as family systems theory, existential, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and cognitive processing therapy (CPT).
Psychodynamic supervision is a context for experiential model learning, wherein the supervisor provides the supervisee with the safety of the psychoanalytic framework by applying psychoanalytic principles and techniques within supervision. Training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy is more about promoting certain values and attitudes than cognitively learning skills. In a very real sense, the psychodynamic approach is โcaught, not taught.โ If you are new to the psychodynamic approach, I invite you to learn it through your own experience in supervision.
Who you choose as a supervisor matters
As a therapist, youโre often expected to have the answers. Youโve done your training, gained your professional qualifications, and now youโre entrusted with the responsibility (and privilege) to empower your patients to improve their lives.
And yet, even with the most prestigious qualifications in the world, perhaps there are times when you donโt quite know how to best meet your patientsโ needs in the most effective way possible. At times, this is because we can get in our own way, and thus in the way of our patientsโ healing and growth. In supervision, we will identify roadblocks and overcome them together โ opening up new pathways and possibilities in the clinical situation.
Supervision should be a positive and therapeutic experience
The โworking allianceโ between supervisor and supervisee is indeed important. However, over and above a working alliance, research on psychoanalytic supervision has shown that supervisees highly value the real relationship between supervisor and supervisee, which is a relationship of genuine care and feeling that goes beyond mere observation and interpretation of interpersonal dynamics within supervision. Within the context of a real relationship, the supervisorโs nurturing stance towards the supervisee points to supervision as taking place within an attachment-based framework. An expectation-defying experience of supervision can also be a corrective experience for supervisees, modelling for supervisees the kind of treatment experience that can be beneficial for patients. In short, supervision is a form of treatment for supervisees that helps supervisees, in turn, treat their patients.
Distance Supervision
Supervision is usually delivered via telephone. Audio-only appointments can simulate lying down on the couch during therapy (yes, this is still done), and becoming comfortable with this practice is good for your professional development. In an audio-only environment, our senses are sharpened to pick up on subtle changes in vocal tone and quality that we might otherwise miss.
Further, in an audio-only environment, you are freer to relax while being less burdened by the need to negotiate eye contact or by other social pressures. Supervisees find that they are less inhibited, freer to daydream, and better able to articulate โ all of which can elicit important material for supervision. You are encouraged to relax in the comfort of your own private space as much as possible.
In cases where audio-only appointments prove ineffective or otherwise unsatisfactory, I will use videoconferencing technology for supervision appointments.
Clinical Supervision At Its Best
The supervisory relationship is a unique and special relationship. Clinical supervision, at its best, is a transformative experience for the supervisee (and, in turn, for the patient). When supervision serves to enhance the competence of the supervisee, the patient benefits. When the patient benefits, the supervisee โ you โ will gain confidence in your clinical work.
In effect, this means that I can help you enhance your existing skills to become a better clinician.

Benefits of Supervision
A unique, relaxed audio-only environment builds up the supervisory relationship, enhances your comfort, and deepens your clinical exploration.
Enhance your ability to 'zoom out' of clinical situations to connect the dots (small and large) and stitch together salient underlying themes.
The real relationship between supervisor and supervisee is key to quality psychodynamic supervision. Within a trusting supervisory relationship, clinical themes and details are better explored.
Psychodynamic supervision values the person of the therapist as the therapeutic 'instrument' who does not 'do' therapy, but who 'is' therapy. Supervision can be transformative in many areas of your life.
